|Faculty Development Programme on Innovative Approaches in Teaching and Research under TEQIP-III at Dr. SSB University Institute of Chemical Engineering & Technology, Panjab University, Chandigarh|
A twinning activity with Dibrugarh University Institute of Engg. and Tech., Dibrugarh, Assam About the workshop:
The relationship between teaching and research is often assumed and just as often ignored. Research should and does influence teaching (and vice versa), but the gulf between the two can at times seem large. Teachers are told to use “research-based strategies” and yet such strategies may be presented to them stripped of the very sensitivity to context, analytic rigor, and thoughtful scepticism that are the hallmarks of quality research. Investing effort in teaching well can actually make us better researchers. Research is the process of creating new knowledge. It is a well known fact that we can’t become great researchers in a subject area merely by taking a class (or even a few classes); we must embed ourselves in that topic area. Teaching a subject is perhaps one of the most efficient ways to become embedded in a subject matter, since the process of explaining concepts to students leaves no room for “cutting corners” in one’s own understanding. This programme will help in explaining how teachers can influence and affect a large number of students in tremendously positive ways. Indeed, giving students the thirst for knowledge to the point that they want to not just consume existing knowledge but make discoveries themselves is a unique opportunity that the educators have. And, certainly, developing smart young students into the researchers of current and future generations is yet another way that this program will pay long-term dividends for research.
